Hi, Here are our latest favorite stories from GrowthLab — our new site all about online business — and around the web. How to win deals and influence industry titans We read about entrepreneurs raising millions of dollars for their companies all the time. It's easy to think that these people have the experience and connections to make this happen. But in reality, it takes a lot of grunt work. For example, one of the cofounders of Hipmunk – a travel search engine – had to show up unannounced at offices around the country, send cold emails, and woo secretaries just to get a chance at a sales call. But this opened them up to serendipity, as I like to say, and validated their product in just 3 months. How many of us would be willing to do this to get a startup off the ground? Use these pictures to avoid creeping weight gain Weight gain doesn't happen overnight. If it did, it'd be easy to see it coming and avoid it. But it sneaks up on us as we're sitting behind a desk, driving to work, or mindlessly ordering meals. This last point is important. Seeing what 2,000 calories looks like in pictures is a Big Win that'll help you avoid creeping weight gain. It's interesting to see how you can get 3 meals at Subway and be okay. But a single dish at another place will push you into weight-gain territory. How a simple name change revived a product from $0 to $22,000 in sales Lots of newbies come up with generic titles for their courses. "Fat loss basics" or "An introduction to fat loss." Nobody cares. Even if people are at that level, they don't think they need basics. Zero to Launch students know how important naming can be. See how one graduate analyzed her launch and discovered how a simple name change revived a product that nobody was buying. She went from making $0 to $22,000 thanks to this insight. That's the beauty of having a system. You never get frazzled. Just go back over the basics after a setback and turn it into a success. You don't have it that bad…stop complaining! Years ago, I did a save $1,000 in 30 days challenge. Right away, I got complainers. "Wahhhh. But Ramit, you say, I have nothing after all my expenses. Wahhhh." Stop complaining! If a married couple can support 13 kids, pay off their mortgage early, and retire by 62 while living in an expensive part of the country, I'm sure you can manage to save $200 or $300 a month. It's not $1,000, but it's a start and it's better than nothing. Close Up: Ryan Holiday The team at GrowthLab recently sat down with Ryan Holiday – bestselling author of multiple books and former Director of Marketing for American Apparel. Video: "What marketing channels should new businesses focus on?" "If I had to start all over again with $500 and a laptop… I would do this…" [0:08] If I had to start all over again with $500 and a laptop, I would focus on one channel only. See what it is here.
