Hi,
At some point, nearly every blogger -- myself included -- comes to the table with one question on their minds: "When and how can make money from all this effort?"
Because, like it or not, money makes the world go round, and if we are working our butts off to get this business of ours off the ground, it sure would be nice to get paid for our efforts, wouldn't it? Heck yeah it would!
But when it comes to monetization, it can pretty easy to get frustrated. We look around and it seems like everybody and their DOG is making money on the Internet, and yet none of it seems to float our way. We are busting our tails trying to convince our friends and family to try to buy something off our Amazon link and wondering why the heck it has to be so hard.
In fact, if you have been blogging for a while and aren't making money yet, I probably don't even have to tell you your monetization strategy is broken. You already know.
What you don't know is WHY.
What is it that the people who are out there CRUSHING IT know that you don't? Why are you working so hard for such pitiful results, while other bloggers seem to strike gold without even trying?
What are you doing wrong?
Well, chances are you've entered the DANGER ZONE.
You're working harder instead of smarter, focusing your attention on the wrong areas, and selling yourself short.
Unfortunately when it comes to blogging, there's not just ONE danger zone, there's many. And when it comes to making money with your blog, I would say there are THREE big income danger zones that you need to avoid at all cost.
And identifying where you are getting stuck is the first step in breaking free.
DANGER ZONE #1: CHASING PAGE VIEWS
The page view game tells us that our revenue is wholly dependent on the number of page views that we receive, which means that if we want to earn more money, we've got to keep increasing our traffic.
And let me tell you, If you want to spend your days as a blogger completely and utterly exhausted by the hustle and on the fast track to burnout, then by all means, keep playing the page view game.
Because when you are playing the page view game, and when you make your income wholly dependent on the number of page views your blog receives, you become a slave. You are basically a crack addict, always needing that next fix. You can't take the time to focus on big picture strategy or to create real relationships or to generate long-term success because you are hopelessly dependent on getting that next big hit.
And the saddest part of this strategy, besides being completely exhausting, is that it is not even very effective. Chasing page views in order to eke a few more pennies out of your ad network revenue is the WORST possible way to monetize your blog. Dollar for dollar, it is your worst ROI.
DANGER ZONE #2: BOTTOM FEEDING
Do you know what a bottom feeder is?
A bottom feeder is a fish that fights over the scraps at the bottom, when there is a whole ocean full of giant fish just waiting to be caught.
Likewise, when it comes to blogging, bottom feeders are the ones who are barely scraping by, fighting for the scraps and the tiny morsels, while ignoring the fact that there is a whole big ocean of opportunity out there.
And if you want to make money from your blog—REAL money—you can't be a bottom feeder. You just can't. You are going to have to release yourself from that bottom feeder mentality, learn how to be a shark instead. You are going to have to learn how to create opportunities, how to charge what you are worth, and how to stop wasting time on low-paying activities because they are "easy."
Because the truth is that the Internet is literally INFINITE, and your ability to make money is infinite as well. There is no shortage, and the fact that others are doing well is actually just proof of what's possible.
So stop wasting your time on the nickel and dime stuff.
Focus on the big picture.
Spend your time figuring out how to catch the big fish.
DANGER ZONE #3: LIMITING BELIEFS
In a nutshell, a limiting belief is a thought or belief we have about ourselves that holds us back from achieving our full potential.
When it comes to blogging, it might be that we don't believe that we actually have anything valuable to say, or that we aren't as talented or witty or well-spoken as so-and-so. It might be that we're not smart enough to be successful.
And when it comes to making money with our blog, I think many of us have a whole lot of limiting beliefs there too, about whether it is actually possible to make a full-time living from our blog, or about how much money we are actually capable of making.
Whether you are willing to admit it or not, there is probably a number floating in the back of your mind about how much you think you can make from your blog.
And chances are, you hear success stories about other bloggers making $10,000, $20,000, $40,000 or even $100,000 a month and there is a little voice inside of you that says, "oh sure, they did it, but I could never make that much."
THAT'S your limiting belief! That voice inside your head that puts a cap on what you are capable of.
But do you know what that voice is?
It's just a voice, just a thought, and nothing else.
And so while we can't always stop those limiting beliefs from popping up, we CAN refuse to listen to them. Because once we've recognized a limiting belief for what it is—just a thought that is holding us back—we can take away the power it has over us and move past it.
