"The best day of your life is the one on which you decide your life is your own. No apologies or excuses. No one to lean on, rely on, or blame. The gift is yours -- it is an amazing journey -- and you alone are responsible for the quality of it. This is the day your life really begins." -- B Moawad, author

Hi,

Have you ever been a little embarrassed or overwhelmed when someone asks you what you do? I have.

Back when I first started blogging I dreaded that question because somehow "blogger" doesn't seem like an acceptable answer. How do you explain to someone who isn't a blogger that blogging can actually make you money and IS, in fact, a job?

Just the question alone is enough to make you second guess yourself!

But today I want to let you in on a secret that might just change everything for you. You see, if you're making money through your blog, you're not JUST a blogger.

You are an entrepreneur.

This is an important mindset shift we all have to make as bloggers. I would even dare to say that it's this one shift that separates average earners from superstars.

And if you haven't gotten to monetization or this mindset shift yet -- don't feel bad! When I first started blogging, I didn't have a flashy business plan. I was just in it to hold myself accountable and figure out how I could spend less money on groceries so there was more money left for shoes. I had ZERO big career goals—and not even a noble purpose in mind!

But pretty early on, I realized that others were making some pretty serious money from it, and I decided then that if they could, I could too. But I still felt more like a blogger than a business owner.

Even when my blog started generating a real income–enough for my husband to quit his job–I still wasn't treating it like a REAL business. I was just a blogger.

My mindset–and the way I viewed myself–was totally wrong. And then, in 2014, I had an epiphany while attending a conference for online business owners. If you had been sitting there watching me at that moment, I'm pretty sure you would have seen the lightbulb go off above my head.

My blog wasn't my business, but it was merely an asset of my business. Even though it was a significant asset — arguably the major asset — it wasn't the entire business.

There were so many other assets I didn't even realize I had. I had an email list. I had expert-level knowledge on the topics I was blogging about. I had a Facebook page, a Pinterest page, products, books, an awesome team to support me.

It was the moment I decided to shift into the entrepreneur mindset and my business only accelerated from there.

Instead of my blog being the center of my business and all my monetization resting on its shoulders, I started using my content to drive people to my email list -- a place I owned and had control.

Instead of focusing on churning out endless content, I starting focusing on building a deeper relationship with my audience in their inboxes and creating products that added value to them.

Instead of focusing on looking at short-term opportunities, I started looking at everything from the big picture view of my business to make sure my assets and activities were helping it grow.

When you look at your blog as an asset that's part of a bigger picture, it opens the door to diversifying your income streams and building a real, sustainable business. So if you really want to take your business to the next level, start thinking bigger than your blog. Embrace the mindset of an entrepreneur.
