[Social Engineering] Electronic Communication

Phishing is a way identity thieves steal your information by pretending to be a company, organization, or entity that you know and trust. Is that really an email from your bank, or is it from an identity thief attempting to get your account number and PIN?

How Does Phishing Theft Occur?

Phishing generally begins with an electronic communication, including email and instant messaging, that claims to be from social websites, IT administrators, online payment processers, or other financial institutions or service organizations. Through the email or instant message, thieves direct you to a fake website that closely resembles and feels like the true, legitimate website. Their website or email then encourages you to enter personal and other detailed information, which they in turn can collect and use. What Is the Cost of Phishing Theft?

For the 12 month period ending August, 2007, an estimated 3.6 million adults lost $3.2 billion from the impact of phishing theft.1 It is also estimated that U.S. businesses lose an estimated $2 billion per year as their clients become victims.2

Information thieves can collect:

* PIN numbers
* Credit card or bank account numbers
* Social security numbers

What thieves can do with this information:

* Identity theft
* Employment-related fraud
* Loan fraud/payday loan fraud
* Bank fraud
* Benefits fraud
* Tax fraud
* Other identity fraud

Phishing Statistics:

* 3.6 million adults affected.1
* $3.2 billion lost by consumers.1
* $2 billion per year lost by U.S. businesses.2

[Social Engineering] Vishing...

Vishing, (or voice phishing) happens when you receive a call on your home phone or mobile device, from someone pretending to be from a trusted source, like your bank. But is the voice on the other end really from your bank or is it just another identity thief fishing for your account information?

Another more common scenario is some one calls your home phone or mobile device and says, you've just won a sweeps-stake or an all expense paid vacation to some exotic place, like Honolulu, Hawaii and they need your credit card number and try to get additional banking information as well as Driver's License and Social Security numbers, if you give up your debit/ credit card information, to validate your identity. Others talk about a self-servicing load, they promise to deposit twice the amount of money agreed upon to your account, you can keep half the money and they need seed money to get that going, something around $500 and again, try to get additional banking information as well as Driver's License and Social Security numbers. But is the voice on the other end really from the concern in question, or is it just another identity thief fishing for your account or (PII) ID information?

How Does Vishing Work?

When thieves go vishing, they’ll call people using an automated system and leave messages saying there’s a problem with your bank account or ATM card or you've won the Lottery or some sweeps-stake. The call will then direct you to a phone number or website that will ask for personal account information to verify your identity, but again, they’re not verifying anything, they’re stealing your account information. Then they’re going to steal your money.

How Much Damage Can Vishing Cause?

According to an FBI scam alert, vishing victims reported having money illegally withdrawn from their accounts within 10 minutes of receiving the vishing call, and another of having “thousands of fraudulent withdrawls”1 following a vishing call. If the transaction is done from a smartphone, it’s also possible for thieves to gain access to all the information stored on the phone, as well. Information thieves can collect:

* Personal information * Account numbers and information * PIN

What thieves can do with this information:

* Identity theft * Bank fraud * Other identity fraud

Seniors at Risk for ID Theft

Seniors are prime targets for identity theft.

Most seniors lead a different lifestyle than when they were younger. They have more free time and the children may have long ago moved out. Seniors have also spent their entire working life building a nest egg of retirement funds.

Identity thieves know this and they target seniors to take their identity and their finances. Their preferred method is the telephone. According to the National Crime Prevention Council, senior citizens are more at risk to be targeted by telemarketing scams than other age groups. These dishonest telemarketers direct anywhere from 56 to 80 percent of their calls to the elderly.

Why are senior citizens targeted so often?

Seniors are prime identity theft targets for a number of reasons. They often have saved a lot more money than younger people who are just starting out. At the same time, they have less people around to help them keep an eye on things.

Seniors are also more trusting of others and less likely to report identity theft because they don’t want family members to think they cannot maintain their independence. An increased need for medical attention would mean increased use of Medicare, resulting in a lot of personal information at various medical facilities. Thieves may even target Social Security checks. Identity protection tips for seniors.

If you’re a senior and you want to help safeguard your identity yourself, there are numerous precautions you can take. It’s a lot of work but it could lower your risk.

* Keep personal information such as bank statements, Medicare statements and your Social Security number in a safe or safe deposit box. * Don’t carry your Social Security card. * Keep credit card numbers secure, you’ll need them if the cards are lost or stolen. * If you pay bills by check, only include the last four digits of the account number. * If you order new checks, pick them up at the bank rather than have them delivered. * Opt out of direct mail offers at the FTC “OPTOUT” line (1-888-567-8688). These mailers include a lot of information and thieves can steal them from your trash. * Never give out Medicare information over the phone or in answer to an email. Medicare will not request information this way. Better yet, never give out any personal information over the phone. * If a caller claims to have a too-good-to-be-true deal, it probably is. Ask to see everything in writing before you commit.

[RELATIONSHIPS] Children/ Family/ Home...

Does your child have a bigger mortgage than you? A nice Ferrari, maybe...

Although it sounds impossible, it isn’t. Identity thieves target children’s unused Social Security numbers and commit all kinds of crimes.

I myself have been asked to provide my daughter's ID information via eMail, upon online research I find the folks who asked, were on a database of individuals in Florida (number one state for ID Fraud), who were involved in ID Fraud. Needless, to say I never provided the information that would have given them her passport ID for all practical and intensive purposes. I notified the authorities. I also notified, my wife and daughter who live in Orlando, FL to be aware of ID Fraud schemes and possibly they may know the individual who sent the email. Their basic ID information had apparently been compromised.

A Carnegie Mellon CyLab 2009-2010 study, the largest child ID theft report ever published, came to some sobering conclusions. First, 10.2 percent of children in the report had someone else using their Social Security number—that’s 51 times higher than the rate for adults in the same population.1

The participants of the study had been notified that their personal information may have been compromised during a data breach. However, the non-scientific report notes that 78 percent of the children whose information was stolen were victimized prior to the data breach events.

"The data does not project or imply any estimate of total number of child identity theft incidents, or what percent of children’s identities are stolen, or what percent of total number of identity theft incidents involve children," reads the study's methodology.

"What this data does is provide some disturbing evidence that identity thieves are targeting children due to the unique value of unused Social Security numbers."

And of course you’re wondering what an identity thief could possibly do with a child’s Social Security number. After all, children don’t even work. Well, the CyLab study discovered that child IDs are used to do everything from buying a home or automobile, open credit card accounts, get a driver’s license or even to get a job.

The largest fraud in the study? $750,000, was committed against a 16-year-old girl. No, this not a typo. How about the youngest victim? Five months old.1

Children’s identities are a gold mine. There is no credit history to get in the way and the child usually won’t access information for a very long time—so the likelihood of getting caught is low. Identity criminals can attach any name and birthdate to these Social Security numbers, and they can even sell them to other shady characters. CyLab suggests these steps to lower the potential for your child’s identity to be stolen.

* Watch for mail in your child’s name. If they suddenly begin to get pre-approved credit card or financial offers, they could have an active credit file.
* Make sure your children understand how important it is to keep their data private, including on social networking sites.

Parents are advised to monitor their children’s identity just as diligently as their own. The impact of identity theft on a child’s credit can be substantial. As they grow toward adulthood, damaged credit can affect everything from the ability to get a student loan, car loan, apartment or even a job.

Having A Successful Home Based Business Made Easy

[category ]
[tags ]

There are numerous reasons why you might be interested in starting your own home-based business, along with a great deal of doubt, concern and questions. The following article offers some tips and advice to help quell the concerns, and offer resolution to common issues many people face in the operation or start-up of a home business. Before starting a home business, be sure to research your market fully. If your product is something that your target market doesn't want or need, you won't get many sales. Rather than spending all your energy trying to force the market to buy your product, spend that energy designing and promoting a product the market wants. If you are going to splurge on any home office furniture, splurge on a very comfortable office chair. You are going to spend many, many hours in this chair and if it is uncomfortable, you will not be as productive as you could be and you could technically, do damage to your body. Since your home is also your work place, make a point to get out of the house on a regular basis. Don't isolate yourself for the sake of convenience. Go have lunch in the park, grab your coffee at a bookstore, etc. Just make sure you are out breathing fresh air at least once a day. If you have a business, then you need a budget. How can you run a cost efficient business without a budget? It is impossible, and therefore imperative that you incorporate a well devised budget into the planning process. This budget should include what your expenses are of course and it should itemize them. Make sure you are thorough and include everything so that you are not misleading yourself. Use your web site to advertise a free product for visitors. This will increase traffic on your site and give potential customers the ability to sample your product. Although it may cost a little money in the beginning, you should make up for it in sales from impressed new customers. Do not be afraid to post your email address on your web site. Make sure that you include it on every separate page that you have. You do not want potential customers to search to figure out how to get in touch with you. The more effort that it takes them, the more likely they are to go on to something else without purchasing from you. Make sure you have a support network before starting your home business. This includes family members who need to be aware of the time commitment involved, as well as an external networks you can reach out to for advice or support. Working from home has numerous benefits, but remaining a part of a group outside your home is invaluable. Making the decision to start a home business or to invest more time in the one you've already gotten off the ground can be a cause of concern. There's so many questions about what to do, when to do it, how to do it, and why to do it, from marketing to overhead to product choice. Whether you just graduated with your MBA or are a stay-at-home mom or dad, you can simplify the answers to these questions by using the sensible advice in these tips. You Want Growth to go Like This: $0, to $1k, to $5k, to $10k, to $30k, to $100k...

Greetings

Let’s be honest.

“Making money online” gets a bad rap.

If you told someone on the street that you “make money online” for a living, they’d probably assume one of two things about you:

(1) You just quit your job and you’ll be experiencing big regrets in 2-6 months when your savings run out and you’ve got nothing to show for it (aka making money online doesn’t work)

(2) You’re a sleazy, tech-savvy con artist who swindles people out of their money while sipping lattes in Starbucks (aka it works, but it necessarily involves pestering or tricking people)

So why does it get such a bad rap?

For good reason.

There’s a LOT of dead ends on the internet. And so LOTS of people have had bad experiences trying to make money online.

Does that mean it can’t be done?

No, it just means it’s not easy. You have to know what to look for. And what to avoid. For example, you’ll never make serious money doing little tasks for other people.

Filling out surveys, doing testing for other people, performing odd jobs… there’s a host of sites that pay you or pair you with people who will pay you to do little tasks(Swagbucks, InboxDollars, Fiverr, etc).

They’re not conning you or tricking you. They really do pay you. But if you’re looking for a serious income online, start looking somewhere else. Other people try to ‘make it’ by doing freelance writing work. Definitely a better route. But still really hard to make a living.

Then there’s the ultimate no-no: scanning forums for “revolutionary, secret methods” and magical systems. Trying to sneak your way into online riches without working for it. That will never work, because riches have always and will always require hard work. Always.

Online or offline.

When it comes to making serious money online, the question is not WHETHER you’ll have to work hard. You’re gonna have to. That should be a given. The question is how and where you should apply your effort.

Making money online is a serious enterprise. It’s not a joke. It takes time to learn. Time to grow.

If you GET that, and you STILL want to do this online thing, but you don’t know where to apply your effort, go here: @MT2B FREE CAR in 30days... mobemerc.com MT2B My Top Tier Biz get $1K, $3K & $5K daily deposited in your bank account. http://preview.tinyurl.com/nuqn8hf .. get a free benz in 30 days mobemerc.com

If you want to learn how success happens, it usually comes in Quantum Leaps, not in tiny little increments.
You want growth to go like this: $0, to $1k, to $5k, to $30k, to $100k.
Don't think, I just want to replace my job income. That won't cause you to think and act any differently than you always have. Take that number and bump it up 10X.

What this does is shift your mindset into whole different gear. You realize that you can't do that by working as you may be now. You can't do it by simply working harder. So, you start to

think in terms of leverage, finding systems and ways to be 10x more effective effortlessly. Einstein said something like: the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over & over again & expecting different results.

Start thinking, Much, Bigger. So lets say that you want to earn $100k your first year....view video https://goo.gl/kF72DG .or. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNS1oM_r7FY

Your Money and Finances

WHAT IS A CREDIT CARD MERCHANT ACCOUNT: THE MOST IMPORTANT ELEMENT BUSINESSES HAVE TO KNOW

With the proliferation of the Internet technology, everything revolves in a fast digital world of information technology, and credit cards had continuously dominated the scene with tremendous rate.

Today, credit cards had already brought shopping online. The convenience it brings to the people had made the credit card industry more than a phenomenon. And where people usually buys, businesses follows. And with e-commerce rapidly saturating the Internet, having a credit card merchant account is the name of the game.

But what is a credit card merchant account? Why is it that businesses consider it as a must-have feature on their online business?

Basically, a credit card merchant account is an account that entrepreneurs put up with a bank so as to enable the firm accept credit card payments from their customers. This goes to show that whether it is a small business or a home business, it is a must for every industry to have a credit card merchant account.

Credit card merchant accounts are effective ways in increasing the sales of a business. This is because credit card merchant accounts entice people to buy on impulse. Therefore, because of the convenience credit card makes, the business will be able to attract more people to buy online, and when they want to buy, the business must have a credit card merchant account so as to accept the buyer?s credit card.

Moreover, credit card merchant accounts can also accept payments by phone and fax. Therefore, it gives the business more flexibility in dealing with payments.

However, getting a credit card merchant account is not that easy. The approval of an application on a credit card merchant account is dependent on the relationship of the business to its bank. This means that if the business is still new, it might have experience some difficulty in obtaining a merchant account.

Nevertheless, credit card merchant accounts are still considered as a crucial element in one?s online business. It is the only way to maximize the business? potential online. Plus, there is definitely no other way to provide additional payment option to the online customers than what credit card merchant accounts can do.

Basically, experts contend that when people find it easy to buy online and doubly easy to pay the items online, then, chances are they would be more than willing to buy it instantly. And that is the main attraction of the credit card merchant account, to create a ?buy now? phenomenon.

Nowadays, businesses are more technology-wise, and where money is the subject matter, credit card merchant accounts is the name of the game.

Your Money & Finances

Opening store or bank credit is just one way that thieves can use your identity to illegally reap financial reward. Cloned debit cards obtained using skimmers are becoming more common thanks to high-tech techniques.

How does identity theft occur?

Identity thieves want to become you. And all it takes is a small amount of your personal information. Identity thieves can open new bank accounts, steal your money, sell your information online and commit several different types of fraud. They could even commit crimes in your name. What are the affects of identity theft?

From fraudulent charges, to stolen money, to an altered financial or criminal background, identity theft can have a serious cost to your wallet and name. In 2011, identity theft cost Americans $18 billion.1

The impact:

* Identity theft cost Americans $18 billion.1
* 11.6 million adult Americans were victims of identity theft last year.1
* Existing card fraud cost Americans $8 billion last year.1

10 Cons of an International Credit Card

Credit card fraud is a fast increasing crime in the world. International Credit Card holders are mostly the victims of this unauthorized access to their accounts. Let?s take a closer look of the problems faced by international credit cards.

1. Repetitive use of credit card numbers. After a credit card number has been used and disregarded, say cancelled, credit card companies would reissue the same number to other cardholders. The personal identification numbers (PIN) is changed as well as the credit cardholder?s personal information. But it still bears the same credit card number.

2. Low standards when it comes to the use of cards by the participating merchants. This is a common problem encountered by international credit cardholders. Employees of the participating merchants have the full access to the account number as well as the security number of the card.

3. Account Statements given out by credit card companies contains less information about the participating merchant. It does not include relevant information about the vendor that charged any transaction on the credit card.

4. Unreliable blocking functions. Once a card loss is reported, it will still take months for the credit card companies to block the transactions being made through the stolen or lost credit card.

5. Lack of validation software. Participating vendors should have better validation software installed on their computer system.

6. Consumer unfriendly policies on fraud management. The policies on the present fraud management take the blame on the cardholders though not directly stipulated. This means that the policies on the fraud management of international credit card companies protect not the consumers but the company.

7. Lax standards on investigation about fraudulent transactions. This is the sad part for the victims of fraud through their credit cards. Getting the suspects charged though proven guilty of fraud seems to take on slowly.

8. Credit card fraud is usually committed through online transactions. This means that credit cardholders are not protected with the authorized or unauthorized use of their cards on purchases or services paid online.

9. Most of the companies that typically appear on charges are those associated with pornography industry. These companies are the ones that accept transactions even without verifying the cardholder?s information.

10. Most of the banks? system is not compatible with other international credit card companies for the e-commerce. This is a potential weakness that would mean loss of clients so they would prefer to keep quiet about it.

ID Theft Recovery: Basic Steps

When identity thieves attack: Are you prepared for the worst?

Worst case scenario, an identity thief steals your money. Or maybe some tricky fraudster is using your identity across the nation. That doesn’t mean you should panic. Luckily, there are steps you can take toward a quick recovery. Don’t wait on the bank.

Self-detection, along with proactive identity theft protection, is the key to a quick recovery. If you wait for a bank or credit agency to notify you of a problem, the damage is already done.

It’s important to frequently review your accounts and records for misuse or fraud. Victims who discovered fraud on their own experienced less damage than those who had been notified by a financial institution or government agency.1

It’s also recommended to monitor accounts electronically. In fact, victims who discovered fraud through electronic monitoring detect the misuse 18 days sooner than when monitoring by paper.1
Act fast. Recover fast.

In the unfortunate circumstance that you are a victim of identity theft, you’ve got to take the proper steps quickly.

What Consumers Can Do if Their Financial Data is Compromised

In this day and age, possible data breaches can unfold at any turn you take. In the recent past, we’ve seen them at retail stores like Home Depot, restaurants like Chick-fil-A and even top financial institutions like Morgan Stanley. Although we’d all like to turn a blind eye and pretend there are no risks involved, the truth is, there are risks for every consumer.

In the event that you believe your financial data might be compromised, there are some immediate steps you can take to minimize the impact. Consider these top moves to make whether you know your data has been compromised or if you just suspect that it might have been.

1. Monitor Your Transactions

Always keep an eye on credit card statements, financial statements and online accounts to track activity and ensure it matches with your own. If you see any suspicious charges, promptly investigate the matter. Your Social Security statements are also important to monitor, since an inflated reported income can be a major tip-off.

2. Report Suspicious Activity Immediately

If you see a card transaction that doesn’t look accurate, contact the card issuer by calling the number on the back of your card. Don’t wait until you’re positive the activity is fraudulent. You should always call even if you’re just slightly suspicious. Even if the activity turns out to be your own, which is always the best-case scenario, it’s better to be safe than sorry.

3. Whenever in Doubt, Order a New Debit or Credit Card

Requesting a new debit or credit card will limit the window that a fraudster has to cause damage to your account. Whenever in doubt, order a new card. While some inconvenience comes with having to reset any auto-payments you may have, this pales in comparison to the inconvenience and months (or years) of hassle that come with someone wreaking havoc on your account and potentially stealing your identity.

4. Use Credit Rather Than Debit

It’s better to pay with a credit card, rather than a debit card, should a data breach occur. Credit cards provide more protection and less risk since funds are not directly withdrawn from your bank account as they are with a debit card. In addition, most credit card companies allow 90 days for a victim to report an unauthorized transaction, but usually allow only two days to report unauthorized debit card purchases. 5. Follow Identity Theft in the News

Paying attention to recent data breaches in the news is a good habit to get into. If a major retailer that you usually shop at, for example, is affected by a breach, you will know to be extra mindful of your accounts and be on the look out for signs that reveal you may have been a victim.

6. Enlist the Help of an Identity Theft Protection Service

An identity theft protection service like LifeLock can provide you with more protection than credit monitoring, and watches out for you in ways banks and credit card companies cannot. By enlisting an extra set of eyes and ears, you’ll be ahead of the game in the event of possible data breaches.

Lost and Stolen Items

Big things can come in small packages, and when in comes to packages as small as your purse or wallet, it doesn’t take much imagination to realize how their contents can quickly become a goldmine for identity thieves.

Why Steal Your Wallet or Purse?

Besides the obvious benefit of finding immediate cash, when a thief steals your wallet or purse, they gain immediate access to the information necessary to steal your identity. It may seem a low-tech method for obtaining your personal information, but the fact is, stealing your wallet or purse is still a major source of identity theft.

What Is the Cost of Stolen Wallet Identity Theft?

Of identity theft victims who knew how their information was stolen, 20% indicated it stemmed from a lost or stolen wallet. Further, this number skewed higher for those who were victims of existing bank account theft (26%) and multiple kinds of theft (29%). 1

Information thieves can collect:

* Driver’s license number * Address * Social Security number * Credit and Bank account information

What thieves can do with this information:

* Identity theft * Employment-related fraud * Loan fraud/payday loan fraud * Bank fraud * Benefits fraud * Tax fraud * Other identity fraud

Stolen Wallet Statistics:

* 20% of identity theft victims who knew how their information was stolen said it was from a lost or stolen wallet.2
* 26% of victims who experienced theft from their existing bank account said it was due to a lost or stolen wallet.2
* 29% of victims who had multiple kinds of theft (bank, credit, other) indicated it was from a lost or stolen wallet.2

Social Networks

So you have a zillion “friends” on your social network. Sure about that?

More than half of U.S. adults actively use social sites such as Facebook and Twitter.1 Identity thieves are discovering the potential for financial gain by incorporating pieces of the everyday information users readily make available on these sites.

The information isn’t difficult to get, either. According to a 2012 study by Javelin Strategy & Research, over 30% of social network users post their birth date. 47% share their email address and another 12% their phone number.1

By combining this information with seemingly everyday facts like birthplace, school names, locations and pet names, a smart identity thief can piece together a pretty hefty victim profile. Some of these crooks are real pros. More social network members creates more opportunity.

With the tremendous growth of social networking, thieves are developing new approaches. They’ll try to “friend” the target and gain more access to their lives and personal information. Another method is called “clickjacking.” Thieves create malicious news and information pages where the function of a button is not what it seems. As viewers “like” and share the page with other friends, more and more victims are collected.

Spam, phishing and malware on social sites are also growing. These attacks go beyond targeting an individual’s online profile and information. They aim to obtain access to the personal and financial information that is stored on the person’s computer, including passwords, login identities, banking data and other highly sensitive information.

Safeguard yourself from friends who really aren’t.

There are ways you can protect yourself from those who pretend to be friends. First of all, consider all information, no matter how harmless it may seem, as a potential advantage for identity thieves. Use the privacy settings each social site provides to limit the amount and exposure of your personal information. Don’t post birth dates, children’s or pet’s names, phone numbers or other specific data. Know and manage your online friends and be wary of strangers. Once they become “friends” you could inadvertently become their friendly banker.

Computers and Technology

Malware, short for malicious software, and crimeware, consist of various types of software, viruses, worms and Trojan Horses designed to run executable programs on your computer. These programs do not need your consent to operate, and are designed to harm or secretly access your computer and its information, causing your personal information to be transmitted to thieves. How Does Malware and Crimeware Theft Occur?

Either through email or website downloads, malware and crimeware install themselves onto your computer, and begin to run. Once they are running, they transmit your personal information, via the Internet, to remote computers, where your information is stored and sold at a later date to counterfeiters.

What Is the Cost of Malware and Crimeware Theft?

Out of more than 18 million computers scanned during April – June 2010, over half of these computers were infected with malware. Of these infections, more than 17% were Banking Trojans/Password Stealers, software programs designed specifically to steal the passwords and banking related information stored on your computer.1 And, according to an article from PandaLabs, a leading malware research organization, the total estimated cost in the US alone was approximately $1.5 billion in 2008.2

Information thieves can collect:

* Social Security numbers
* Passwords
* Email and street addresses
* Credit card and bank account numbers
* Logon IDs

What thieves can do with this information:

* Identity theft
* Employment-related fraud
* Loan fraud/payday loan fraud
* Bank fraud
* Benefit fraud
* Tax fraud
* Other identity fraud

Malware and Crimeware Statistics:

* Over 50% of scanned computers
* were infected with Malware and * Crimeware.1
* Banking Trojans/Password
* Stealers accounted for more than 17% of these infections.1
* The total estimated cost of US identity theft from malware in 2008 was estimated at $1.5 billion.2

Smartphones & Tablets

You don’t know how it happened, but somewhere between the Blackberry and the iPhone, you got addicted. The loving social media alerts, the persistent email notifications and that infuriating phantom ring (I swear I heard it beep). Ahh, the joys of owning a smartphone.

But you’re not the only one watching your phone’s every waking move. Identity thieves want nothing more than to crack into your smartphone and steal everything hidden inside—your personal information, passwords and data.

In fact, according to a report done by Javelin Strategy; Research, smartphone users are 35% more likely to experience fraud than the average consumer. One-third of smartphone and tablet owners save personal information on their devices, but only 16% have installed software capable of remotely wiping the device if stolen. That’s a lot of people carrying around an identity jackpot.

And identity thieves don’t necessarily need to steal your device to get the desired information. Thieves can hack into your smartphone when you’re on public Wi-Fi or send phishing text messages and emails You could even unintentionally download an application rigged with malware. According to the same study, users who have clicked on applications or checked in using GPS are even more likely to experience fraud. You wanted to be connected, but not to an identity thief.
Since detaching yourself from your beloved devices probably isn’t an option, we suggest making a few minor adjustments to your connected life.

1. Turn off your GPS. Do you really need to check-in?
2. Install security software. There are several credited programs out there that give you the ability to back-up your device’s data, as well lock and/or wipe it out if lost.
3. Enter the app store with caution. Not all applications are safe for download. Read user reviews and research the app developer.
4. Stay off public Wi-Fi (Unless you enjoy connecting with malicious hackers).
5.Utilize your phone’s lock and password function. This simple step could protect your phone from prying eyes.

If nothing else, keep in mind that your smartphone isn’t invincible and it doesn’t have super powers. So be careful what you store and be careful what you do.

Smartphone Data Theft

Be smarter than your smartphone.

According to comScore, 97.9 million Americans owned smartphones in the last quarter of 2011.3 Smartphone proliferation, including the iPhone, Android, Windows and Blackberry platforms, has certainly attracted the interest of thieves seeking to steal personal identity information.

A 2012 study by Javelin Strategy & Research found that 6.6% of smartphone users were victims of identity fraud in 2011, and were almost a third more likely to be victimized than the average consumer.4
If your phone is lost or stolen, others will have access to your data.

You’ll also have to be more careful with free applications because they could have bad intentions. And while downloading from legitimate, well-known app stores lowers the risk, it doesn’t eliminate it. So if your phone isn’t secure and you love to download those free apps from who knows where, you may be more vulnerable. Then, if you use your phone to visit social network sites, especially through public Wi-Fi, the risk could be even higher.
Tips to lower your likelihood of becoming an identity fraud victim.

Use secure passwords to protect your mobile devices (do it on home devices, too)
Don’t post personal information on social networks, it can be used for identity verification by criminals
Watch out for apps, no matter how good they sound; make sure they’re from a trusted source
Monitor your credit card use and check your statements

Smartphone operating system developers, including Apple, Android, Google, Microsoft, RIM and others, are working to patch security vulnerabilities. But the tenacity of identity thieves will continue to make the smartphone a major contributor to personal identity theft.

Tips to Avoid Identity Theft

The modern-day Scrooge can strike under many guises this holiday season, from a phishing link to full-blown identity theft. And since this holiday season is forecasted to be a particularly “digital" one, with more shoppers heading online and turning to their smartphones to purchase gifts, according to the National Retail Federation, there's an increased likelihood that you could be tricked or fooled by someone on the naughty list.

According to the NRF, the average spending per person will reach $805.65 in 2015, up from $802.45 last year. Meanwhile, almost half of holiday shopping, consisting of browsing and buying gifts, will be done online, according to the Federation's survey. Consumers say 46 percent of their shopping will be done online, and 21.4 percent of smartphone owners will also use their devices to purchase gifts for others.

“We expect consumers will tackle their holiday shopping lists with a dose of optimism, tempered by a hint of caution as they look for ways to find the perfect, practical gift," Matthew Shay, president and CEO of NRF, said in a press release.

Indeed, caution is key here….especially in a day and age when data breaches and identity theft are growing threats. During the holidays, when many people are in a rush and distracted, it's easier than ever to fall victim. Here are 10 ways to avoid holiday identity theft this year.

Get Protected Now.

1. Use Legitimate Sites When Shopping

There are signs to help indicate that a site is secure, such as “https" in the Web address and an icon of a locked padlock on the left side of the URL.

You should also be sure that emails sent to you with promotional links don't point back toward an altered link, often with one or two letters missing or changed (think “Targt" instead of “Target," and so on). This could signal a phishing scam, designed to fool you into entering personal information, like your credit card number or your email and password, which may later be used in an attempt to compromise your identity.

2. Use a Secure Network

When shopping online, also be sure that you're using a secure Wi-Fi connection, so that no one can lurk online and spy on your actions. Remember that your phones and computers are also gateways to your personal information, so make sure they are password-protected and also secure.

3. Be Careful of What You Share Online

Over-sharing information such as your children's names and dates of birth or even holiday plans can lead thieves lurking on your “friend" list to gain access to valuable information that could help them hack into your online accounts or even know when you're out of town to attempt to break into your property.

4. Choose Cash or Credit over Debit

Credit cards provide more protection when it comes to fraudulent activity, since credit card companies monitor suspicious activity and can put a stop to fraudulent charges before they happen. Debit cards, on the other hand, immediately withdraw money from your account and don't offer the same level of protection.

5. Use Credit Protection Tools

Also take advantage of credit protection tools, such as ID theft alerts, enrolling in an identity theft protection company plan, and new chip cards, which add an extra layer of protection for consumers. If you haven't received a new card with a chip from your company, you should request one before you begin your holiday shopping.

6. Be Careful When Opening New Retail Credit Accounts

Many stores offer attractive discounts and incentives to those who open a store credit card account, but it's important that shoppers remain conscientious throughout the enrollment process. For example, you may be required to write down your Social Security number or other personal information when opening an account. Be sure no one is spying over your shoulder when you do so, and ask the sales associate how your information will be discarded after it is entered into the system.

If you receive promotional offers through email that seem too good to be true, be sure to do your due diligence. You'll want to make sure these offers are legitimate and secure before submitting any personal information.

7. Be Leery of Skimmers

Remain on the look out for devices attached to card readers or ATMs that could steal your financial data. Also watch out for anyone behind you in a checkout line that could be snapping a photo of your credit card number or other personal information.

8. Check Your Statements and Credit Reports Twice

Always check over your credit card statements and credit reports, especially during high-volume shopping periods like the holiday season. Remain vigilant and inquire about any suspicious activity to catch any attempt at identity theft before it escalates.

9. Write “Check Photo ID" on the Back of Your Credit Cards

In case your credit cards are lost or stolen, it's helpful to write “check photo ID" on the back of your card. This will prevent anyone else from being able to use it.

10. Freeze Your Credit If Needed

If you have any serious suspicions about identity theft or cyber thieves (for example, if you've recently been affected by a major data breach), then consider freezing your credit to prevent anyone from opening a new line of credit in your name. You can inquire about this with credit monitoring services, or you can contact the big three credit bureaus—Equifax, Experian and TransUnion—to place a temporary hold until matters are resolved.

Corporate Internet Marketing Strategy-Internet Marketing Not As New As Some Believe

[category ]
[tags ]

There is a lot of attention being paid to the world of internet marketing, but it isn't as new as some media outlets would like us to believe. Having a corporate internet marketing strategy is more important than ever, and not having one could be costing your business a lot of money. It's easy to get confused with all of the information floating around on the topic, but let's try to clear some of it up so you can take advantage of all the internet has to offer you and your business. "Why are you in business?" "To make money!" That's all there is to it, right. After all, you wouldn't be in business if you weren't planning on making money. While that would be one of the reasons you are business, it's not actually what will make you money. Your customers don't care about your desire to make money; if they did, they would just give you money without you giving them anything in return. That simply doesn't happen in the real world. Your corporate internet marketing strategy has to be based on what your customers want, not what you want. To be more specific, your strategy needs to highlight the benefits to your customer (what they want) so you can generate higher profits (what you want). Before you can give them what they want, you need to know who your ideal customers are and what it is that they really want. The cool thing is that the internet is an ideal way to get your marketing message out there, and it can be done for a relatively low investment when compared to traditional advertising. Of course you should also include traditional media in your marketing campaigns, but be sure they complement your online marketing and vice-versa. Internet marketing covers everything you do online that could be even remotely associated with your business. A comment on a message board, a blog post, an update to your personal Facebook page, anything, anywhere will all add to the public perception of you and your business. That doesn't mean you should be afraid to have an online presence, but it does mean that you should carefully consider everything you say and do online. There may have been a time when a business, any business, could gain a foothold in the market by simply having a website, but those days are long gone. However, if you don't have a website and a full corporate internet marketing strategy then you are losing ground to your competition. Speaking of competition, it has changed, too. It used to be that you knew who your competition was and that they were of the same relative size as your business. Today, your competition could be a single person with little more than an internet connection. It's debatable whether there was ever time when you didn't need an online strategy, but there is no doubt that you now need a corporate internet marketing strategy if you wish to have a successful business.
